Greetings & Salutations my fellow South Dakotans'! Today I would like to discuss IM Measure 22 with you! IM Measure 22 was overwhelmingly passed in the November 8, 2016 General elections, and became effective on November 15, 2016. You may also know that it came under attack by our Governor and many other political opponents from the very beginning! As a matter of fact, I believe the powers opposing IM Measure 22 truly did not believe the voters would vote for this measure, but fortunately they did, and I am one of them! Governor Daugaard went on the record saying, "out of state mind banks should stay out of South Dakota's laws and Constitution!" This is another way of saying, we don't want to change a damned thing! We like things the way they are now! We like our special interest bankers, they're good to us! This is exactly what IM Measure 22 is intended to combat, political corruption and special interest funding of our State elections!
We The People of South Dakota are tired of superpacs, lobbyists, Big Pharma, and special interest groups dictating where, what, when and how our State representatives should act and that's why IM Measure 22 was overwhelmingly voted for by the SD electorate. Now, our termed out Governor and the State Attorney General wants to either repeal all or relevent parts of Measure 22. One thing that convinces me that they didn't really support this measure is that only a bare bones discription of the measure was initially drafted. No language in the measure was targeted towards how to fund it, or implement it! It was almost as if they didn't think it stood a chance to pass in the November 8, 2016 general election! However, in the current atmosphere of politics, people are sick and tired of superpacs, lobbyists, and special interests groups buying our State political candidates by funding their respective elections. This conduct should be deemed unconstitutional, but these opponents' don't think like taxpaying voters now do they? Of course they don't like IM measure 22 because it cuts off their special interest funding for the next State election. Actions speak for themselves folks! Jackley transferred over $700,000 into his campaign bank account prior to November 15th; and Christi Noem transferred a whopping $1.7 million into her campaign fund account! Surely you don't believe this money came from salaries from Congress or Attorney General positions; this money, a good portion of it, came from special interest groups in an effort to buy support of their agenda! This is what is unconstitutional folks, not IM Measure 22's original intent!
Furthermore, IM measure 22 was designed to create a level playing field for all resident citizens to participate in State elections; but the opponents' of IM Measure 22 don't want this to happen at all. By keeping things the way they were before IM Measure 22 became the law, they benefitted from lobbyists, superpacs, Big Pharma, and special interest money to buy their political office and to be forever beholding to their bankers who buy their services in office. They can't take their money and then bite the hand that feeds them because they wouldn't get reelected again!
IM Measure 22 would give every red blooded South Dakota who has established residency to run for government office with a fair and equal chance to win and serve their communities across the State. But again, the opponents' of IM Measure 22 do not want a smaller piece of the political pie, they like things the way they use to be, it worked better for the rich and elite, the special interest groups could buy them, but they couldn't buy general election or midterm candidates if IM Measure 22 or something similar were enacted, no sir!
We The People of South Dakota have had enough special interest bullshit and that's why we voted for IM Measure 22! Our political opponents' site Constitutional grounds, but are not pointing with any particular degree of specificity to what exactly is Constitutionally wrong with IM Measure 22! They see nothing wrong with status quo special interest campaign funding, but challenge IM Measure 22 on nonspecific Constitutional grounds! Makes me wonder why? As a law school graduate, with a concentration in Constitutional Law, as well as a legal resident of South Dakota, I would rather know my candidate is truly representing my interests as opposed to some special interest group calling the shots for their own benefits, wouldn't you agree South Dakotans'? Pick up the phone, the pen, or email your State Representative and tell them to knock it off, leave IM Measure 22 alone; revise the language, fill in the blanks and appropriate the necessary funding to make IM Measure 22 work for the People of South Dakota! How can anything the voters wanted be unconstitutional? Daugaard wants things the way they use to be; and Jackley has a major conflict of interest because he is charged with defending the law, but he doesn't really support it! How can you advocate for IM Measure 22 if you don't believe or support it? It's time to take back our government from corrupt politicians and special interest group once and for all!
