Greetings & Salutations my fellow South Dakotans'! I know absolutely nothing about what's in the Quran, or why some people would choose to follow what it says on any level or for any reason! I am not Moslim and I do not practice Islam!
However, I do have an understanding of what it takes to be a Christian! I have read the Holy Bible several times; I do not profess or claim to be a scholar of the Bible, nor do I wield it like a sword to smite my opponents! The reason I don't judge others concerning their beliefs in the Bible is because an individuals beliefs in the Bible are personal and distinct in each and every Christian! I can read the Bible 1,000 times and come away with new and expanded understandings of what it means to me!
The basis of the Bible lies within the 10 Commandments. If we could, as a Christian society, live our lives' according to just these 10 Commandments, we would not need armies, police, attorneys, or Judges! However, as I have always said, "'we all live in a '7 Up Utopia', we've never had it and we never will!'"
What I do know about the Koran is that it's a dominating ideology. In other words, wherever Islam & Sharia Law exist as a majority, no other religion is allowed to co-exist on an equal continuum. This is patently distinguishable from Christian beliefs and religious values. Both the Bible and the Koran call for similar punishments of particular offenses deemed sacrilegious, but nowhere in the Bible will you find reference to the destruction of none Christians merely because they refuse to convert to Christianity. The Koran specifically refers to punishments, including, but not limited to beheadings, genital mutilations, amputations of limbs, hangings, crucifixions, and imprisonment of citizens' for anything that offends another Muslim! A Muslim husband can cause the execution of any of his many legal wives' for a milieu of arbitrary & capricious reasons. Sharia Law also makes homosexuality a crime punishable by death (i.e. throwing gays off roof tops)! The Bible, also has punishments for homosexual conduct, but in recent years western societies have evolved to show compassion and tolerance.
The Constitution guarantees certain rights and protections, and by virtue of the 14th Amendment make the first 10 contained within the "Bill of Rights" applicable to the States'!
One of the most treasured to Americans' is the 1st. Amendment. The 1st. Amendment affords all citizens', rights of freedom of religion, association, redress for grievances, and freedom of speech! Sharia Law quashes such rights and typically they try to persuade none Sharia compliant countries to adopt slander laws making it a crime to say anything that might offend Sharia Law.
The Constitution affords women the rights to vote, to own property, to drive a car, and to go shopping without an escort! Women under Sharia law cannot leave their homes without an escort, they are not allowed to drive, can not vote, and even their testimony in a court of law is given 1/2 the credibility of a Moslim man! If a Moslim women accuses a Moslim man of rape, she must have at least 4 male eyewitnesses, willing to testify that they saw the woman being raped by the accused. If she cannot carry that burden, she could face a death penalty for having unlawful intercourse! In America, women who are raped will never be faced with the threat of death for accusing another of rape. Moreover, her testimony is given equal consideration in a court of law, with the right of compulsory cross examination. Under Sharia Law, an Imam acts as Judge, Jury and Executioner. His word is final! No appeal to a higher Court.
Bottom line folks, there's no nexus, no compatibility between the Constitution and Sharia Law! In fact they are as different as day and night, as different as two sides of a coin, and as different as the choice between right and wrong! I love my freedoms guaranteed under the federal Constitution. Even the individual States cannot allow less then what the Constitution affords us; however, States' can grant us more rights and protections, but not less then the Constitution affords us as legal citizens! There are numerous other distinctions, but this is just a blog, not a biography!
In my quest for the Governors' Office there's one thing I can assure every legal resident citizen of this great State of South Dakota, I will uphold both the State and Federal Constitutions to the letter! I will never sign any bill into law that further erodes Constitutional protections, ever!
The Declaration of Independence states,
"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. . .
What this means to me is as citizens, we are deemed equal in the eyes of Lady Justice, and no man or government shall take these rights for granted.
Moreover, the "Declaration" tells us that, "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, . . . , and to organiz[e] its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
The "Declaration" also proscribes changes to our Constitution for "Transient" reasons! Wherefore, I shall remain vigilant in my beliefs that these guaranteed rights shall not be abridged under my watch!
